Plan and Apply

Studying abroad requires a lot of planning, and our office is here to help you meet your goals, needs, and expectations. To help you get started, be sure to attend a study abroad general information session. Our office hosts general information sessions every other week every semester. These general information sessions are designed to familiarize you with the study abroad process at The New School. In the session, you will learn more about the different program types, study abroad policies, finances in relation to study abroad, approved programs for your major, and the application processes for each kind of program. As such, this is the first step we recommend that all students take when considering studying abroad. Information sessions are offered both in person and virtually.

After attending an information session, we encourage students to schedule an appointment with a Study Abroad Advisor as early as possible to discuss program options and answer any lingering questions. Students are encouraged to begin planning as early as their first semester at The New School and begin the application process at least a full semester before travel. However, we encourage students to reach out to our office about studying abroad the year before their planned semester for study abroad.

In addition to starting the application process, students should also begin reviewing travel requirements. The first step for any international trip is to get a passport. Please keep in mind that your passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months after the end of your study abroad program. If it is not, please renew your passport as soon as possible.
